Story: Sleeping With the Enemy

The image most people might have of a laboratory would be a pristine white room, with occasional grey equipment. Lifeless. Colourless. Charmless. Not so in this case. Everything within was a shade of light blue, so light you wouldn't even notice unless someone held up something white next to it for contrast. Within that room, a certain blue-haired man was standing in a similarly light blue labcoat and holding a device that looked very much like a microphone. The fact that this scientist was standing over an unconscious young girl wearing little more than a leotard and a very short, very frilly skirt should be of absolutely no concern. Honest.

"Subject: Sailor Mercury," he began in a rather dispassionate manner. "Female. Human. Japanese. Brainwaves indicate high intelligence, and comparable scans indicate her intellect is higher than typical for her Place. Though she is currently unconscious, treatment is unnecessary. There is no sign of physical harm and this state has been induced by exhaustion. The medicine producer is developing an energy supplement to facilitate easier recovery, following a scan of her physiology to ensure no allergic reaction."

Blue - or Doctor Kimyō as he was currently referring to himself - stopped talking for a moment when he realised his spare hand was brushing up against the sleeping Senshi's cheek. He deliberately stepped away, and then resumed.

"Subject has demonstrated mastery of water-based magic," he continued. "Source of magic is unknown at this time. Her physical features are slender and healthy for her demographics, but do not explain how she is unharmed following that combat. Likely solution is the unusual uniform that she is wearing, which appears to offer minimum protection at a cursory glance. It has resisted attempts to analyse."

Blue cleared his throat. "Physical features: Height is approximately one hundred fifty-seven centimeters, hair and eyes are the same shade of dark blue as my own. She possesses physical features typically attributed to possessing the 'cute' manner of sexually attractive properties. Note: This researcher has detected signs of physical attraction towards subject, and shall attempt to remain dispassionate where possible."

He clicked a button on the side of the device and took a few short breaths. This was rather unusual for him. Yellow always did tease him, oh, we have to get you a girlfriend, I know just your type! She's really into science and finds smart guys hot. Well. He had little time for that kind of nonsense usually. He'd played along at first, but those so-called smart girls were frankly quite foolish in comparison to himself. Even though they had assets that were supposedly superior to this girl, this Sailor Mercury, there was something about her that was ticking all of his boxes.

Which led him to another whole new experience as well. Fascination and fear at the same time. He only had a completely dispassionate, distant view of the mating process of his own kind. He had never taken part in such activities with any serious intention. Never mind the cultural differences! His brilliant intelligence and wealth of knowledge were telling him only that he did not know the answer. While knowing that he did not know was a sign of great wisdom, and the almost compulsive intention to find out the answer reaffirmed that assessment, it was no comfort to him because he absolutely didn't want to frighten her off.

Which, let's be honest. Might well happen. After all, he was a stranger to their realm and she was one of its defenders. One need not be a genius to see how that might turn out.

Ah, it appeared his energy supplement was prepared. There was only so much a scan could tell him. He would have to wake her up and make use of his prepared alter ego. She wouldn't tell him everything right away. She would have no reason to, and was too intelligent for that. But maybe if he could figure out a way to promote a little touch of closeness first? Yes, that might be the best course for him to take. It might even get the two of them closer together.

He didn't use a hypodermic needle for this task. Barbaric device. Instead he used - well, basically a hypospray from <i>Star Trek</i>. Right into the bloodstream with none of the pain. Miraculous device that can't get to the real world fast enough. As soon as the device was pressed to her neck, Sailor Mercury did a rather panicked sit-up, and she didn't really need to say a word at first. Her body language and facial expression did all that on behalf of her vocal cords.

'Where am I? How did I get here? What did you just stick in my neck? Who are you again?' and other similar questions, probably too many for the suddenly conscious girl to comprehend properly. Alright then. Time to launch into his prepared story...

"It's alright," he said in what he hoped was a reassuring tone of voice. Yellow and Red were so much better suited for reading people. "You're safe. This is my laboratory, and I brought you here when you fainted after defeating that Blue Minotaur. Remember? I am Doctor Kimyō, and you are Sailor Mercury."

"That's right," she confirmed. "I remember perfectly. There was a blue minotaur rampaging in the street, and you assisted in determining the best course to defeating it."

"Affirmative," he replied enthusiastically. "You were depleted of energy reserves upon completion of the confrontation. So I brought you here to ensure you were free of injury and provide treatment if necessary. You seem to be unharmed, and may leave at your own discretion."

That was a calculated move. Make it clear that she was not his prisoner, even though he dearly wished that he could spend as much time with her as possible. It had to be her choice to stay. If he had read that brainwave correctly, she was like him. Intelligent but curious. That curiosity would compel her to remain. Find answers. And in seeking out those answers, she would provide him with a few. And stay in his company a little longer.

"I don't recognise any of this equipment," she said, and he knew that he had her. "What sort of laboratory is this? Who are you? What do you know about that blue minotaur?"

"Forgive me," he said. "I should have explained that sooner. I originated in another dimension, and am in pursuit of certain undesirable elements that escaped our confines. You happened upon that one before I arrived, and I knew that if I intervened in the midst of battle that it would have resulted in greater casualties. For that reason I stayed my hand to limit collateral damage."

She was almost too busy staring at his waste vaporiser, and he feared she had not been paying attention to his story. Too fascinated by what must seem to be completely alien technology, he could understand that. He was quite fascinated by some of theirs as well, and had yet to determine the function of almost any of -

"Garbage disposal," Sailor Mercury said after a moment. "Very efficient. Reduces it to molecular components, then uses this deflector to gather the resulting radiation, channelling some of the energy into powering the device while the rest is transferred into this pocket dimension. Remarkable."

Blue felt his heart stop beating for a moment, but only because it resumed with renewed vigor. Physical attraction? No. Not just physical attraction. Her body was... cute. But her mind! That mind was the sexiest thing he'd ever encountered. Sure, she'd cheated a little with that obvious scanning device she'd summoned over her eyes, but still, determining the function that quickly left him slackjawed and, for lack of a better expression, dumb.

"How many creatures like that escaped?" she asked, hovering around the room and looking at the equipment one by one. "Are they the same kind of creature, or is there some variation? If they're as dangerous as that, we'll need as much information as possible."

"R-Right," he said, adjusting his collar. These feelings were new to him. Brand new. "Collaborating with local defensive forces seems a tactically viable method. I shall prepare a copy of the dossier for you, but in exchange I would like a little information about yourselves."

"An exchange of information?" Sailor Mercury asked, turning around to approach him. "I suppose that seems reasonable. However... I would like to talk to my friends first. Is it alright if I call them in?"

"Of course," Blue said. "I would very much like to meet your -"

And then Sailor Mercury had pushed him back onto the bed with remarkable speed and strength. Not in a hostile attack as his instincts had first insisted. No. This was much more... Pleasurable. She had pushed her body right up against his, and the relatively thin fabric of her bizarre magical leotard left remarkably little to his quite wild imagination. Not that he was concentrating tremendously on how her breasts were pushing into his chest or her legs were around his hips when her lips were pressed quite firmly against his in a rather surprisingly erotic and blatant display of mating intention that definitely required further study.

Alas, all too soon she pulled away from him and whispered, "What exactly was in that thing you injected me with?"

"An energy supplement," he replied, and then he caught the rather twisted implication. "I used my medical device to develop one that would not cause allergic reaction by having it scan your body first to produce the most efficient drug for that purpose. I swear, that's all that -"

"You mean, that medical machine over there?"

"Yes."

"The one with the thought-controlled interface."

"Affirmative!"

"Maybe you didn't do it deliberately," she said. "But maybe the machine picked up your unconscious thoughts?"

"In which case..." he said with great regret. It was the hardest thing he'd ever had to say in his entire life. "Perhaps it might be best if we created an antidote for this accidental aphrodisiac before we do something foolish that we regret."

Mercury was biting her lip and trembling. He could tell that she sort of wanted to continue, but recognised the same thing he did. Which is why she slipped off him and brushed down her uniform in an attempt to control herself. But he could see that it was difficult for her. She kept on stealing little glances up at him, then blushing and looking away.

"Forgive me for saying," he said just before they started to work. "I lack the data to make this anything greater than a hypothesis at this time, but with each passing moment it becomes increasingly likely that it will eventually become a theory, and perhaps some day even a mathematically determined fact."

"What might that be?"

"That I have fallen in love with you."
