Discussion: Tainted Cube Code Geass

I figured some people might not have seen the conversation in the comments section for the last tainted cube post (which had a lot of interesting ideas) so I thought to myself, let's get a scene by scene breakdown of what is intended for this next episode written out.

Scene 1: Nunnally is approached by a sentient teddy bear, and given the powers of the White King. She is initially shocked and overjoyed to find she can see and walk, but is rather less thrilled upon learning of the danger she must protect others from, or the fact that she can only do so in this form because of the magic involved. The bear explains that this power is being given to her so that she can protect the world from the chained wolf Fenris and the Angels searching for where it is being chained up so that it can be set free.

Scene 2: Back in Shinjuku, Kallen is initially relieved that the crisis is all over with... Until a miniature version of Sachiel appears and starts casually slaughtering everyone around it. In the mounting panic, the Japanese civilians and Britannian soldiers initially flee, but some do linger in an attempt to attack the creature to permit others to escape. While Kallen wonders why the soldiers would do this for people they would have killed a few moments ago, a voice behind her explains that it is because "humans band together in the face of a common enemy". It is another bear, and this one offers Kallen the powers of the Black King to help destroy the monster...

Scene 3: Suzaku shows up to fight Sachiel in his Lancelot, but is badly outmatched. Even so, he will not back down and will gladly give it his all to stall for time. Even if it means sacrificing himself to stop this overwhelming brute, he will not back down! At this point the White King arrives and helps him protect some fleeing civilians, but even together they can't seem to do much against this thing. At which point the Black Queen arrives riding a knightmare frame model the likes of which has never been seen before, and throws everything she has into taking down the rampaging Angel. Even so, it still seems hopeless until Lelouch (introducing himself as Zero) contacts the Lancelot and is pleasantly surprised that the Black Queen and White King can hear him as well. With his co-ordination, the three of them take the Angel down. The Black Queen flees, while the White King remains behind to help those that she can.

Scene 4: The next day at school, both Kallen and Nunnally feel rather odd and learn (seperately) it's probably a side effect of having that much magic and adrenaline in their system at the same time. Given the cube's nature, a side effect they're feeling is probably intense arousal. Anyway, Lelouch uses his Geass on Kallen to uncover information about why she is a terrorist, which hardly makes things any better for her. Once he's done she's not so much interested in finding out what he knows about Shinjuku as she is about finding a little alone time with him. Remember that Lelouch's Geass has been twisted around by the cube.

And that's about as far as I've currently got. These scenes are going to be pretty darn big, but I would like to at least cover much the same material as the third episode itself. What do you think? Got any suggestions for that? Would it be better if the two magical girl teams were actually playing against one another rather than against something else?

  1. Well if there is some sort of great evil attacking whoever stands in their way, Britannian or Number and there isn't some sort of ulterier motive for fighting them (such as in Madoka where the magical girls needed to gather the remains of their enemies least they turn into monsters themselves, so infighting was not uncommon) I think it's perfectly reasonable for them to work together even if they have opposing interests or ideals.

Since there are two teams I decided to think up a few more powers for the varios pieces:

Black Knight: stick with the short/mid range teleporting, it fits with a Knight and has cool tactical and combative applications.

White Knight: Flight; another way to bypass "other pieces", has a number of tactical applications, useful for rescuing civilians in certain situations, can act as a "first responder" to attacks until the heavier hitters arrive and seems very magical girl-y. Combined with a sword and knight attire she could fight like a valkyrie, swooping in and striking with hit-and-run tactics, or armed with modern weaponry such as rifles and grenades can be ideal as a harrasser.

(Sayoko could make for a good Knight, though I'm not sure if she'd fit better as the Black Knight (having joined the organization in cannon and is a skillful fighter, to put it mildly) or the White Knight (for her close proximatey to Nunnally and her desire to protect the Lamperouge siblings). A shame Suzaku and Jeremiah are guys, otherwise they'd have made perfect Knights of White and Black respectively.)

Black Pawn: Creates a small army of shadow/ink familiars that resemble animals, no stronger than a typical animal of that type but expendable and useful for distracting strong enemies and routing weaker ones.

White Pawn: Shadow Clones. The applications should be readily apparent for both combat and helping innocents, if the girl has other talents (medicine, computers (Nina), maintenance (Rakshata), etc.) this ability could become invaluable. If you want you could make it so that each clone is a "real" person but any injuries that one sustains is kept when they fuse back together (though diluted in response to how many uninjured clones also fused; i.e. one clone with a broken arm fusing with three that are uninjured may find she has a compound fracture, fusing with ten and her arm will simply be badly bruised...) (Sayoko could also fit this position nicely.)

I'll think of some more ideas later...

Additionally will Lelouch find out about Kallen's new powers while he "interrogates" her. It's possible he recognized her voice as being Q1 (unless ala Sailor Moon logic it is impossible to recognize her while as the Black Queen), or she confesses this secret in bed as a way to try and impress him with just how useful she could be in his fight against Britannia. (It'd have to come up at some point when Lelouch starts noticing that his ace pilot keeps disappearing whenever there's a monster attack and the Black Queen shows up. He could even take credit and explain to the other Black Knights(?) that he gave the Queen's Knightmare to her as a token of good faith and that it was simply a highly experimental Knightmare that Clovis was developing in secret and he stole durring the confusion. A questionable explanation but who's going to dispute him?)

I also assume that you plan on revealing another girl(/s?) durring the Hotel hostage incident. You know what'd be funny? Having Nina transform and help save the day and Eupie develops a small crush for her savior.

  2. Oh wait hold on, I misread what you were asking. I thought you we wondering if they should fight against one another, in spite of a larger threat endangering both groups.

I dunno, it could be interesting having their magical battles resemble an actual game of chess with Lelouch attempting to capture enemy "pieces" either to eliminate or, preferably, to convert to his side by way of his geass and lots of sex.

However that kind of setup makes me think that it should be pro-Britannia vs. anti-Britannia/pro-Japan. So Nunnally would probably need to be on Kallen's side since being on the White side may reveal her and her brother's identities.

Hm... I'm torn. On the one hand the united magical girls vs. Angels, Fenrir and whatever else sounds really cool. On the other hand pitting them against one another sounds like it would balance the game a bit better, fits the theme of chess better (White attacks, Black reacts, Britannia, Japan) and allow for a more interesting story down the line...

  3. Well, I did have one thought earlier (as in, literally as I was about to leave for work. I've been sitting on this for ten hours, desperate to let you all know!) I think it might be interesting to do both at once. As in, normally White and Black don't like each other, but will work together in the face of a greater adversary. This allows me to do something very interesting thematically.

What do I mean? Well. I was thinking that when the Angel shows up, the Britannian soldiers start evacuating the area while firing upon the monster. The idea here being presented to Kallen in the following manner.

"Say you were locked in a room with Clovis, and there was a gun with a single bullet between the pair of you. What would you do? Would that action change if there was a ravenous, rabid wolf in the room as the pair of you? When humans are faced with a common threat, even enemies can momentarily become allies."

In point of fact, I figure the whole fight with the Angel represents this theme extremely well. Not only are the White King and Black Queen having to work together, but so are Lelouch and Suzaku on the same day they were on opposing sides in a battle.

I really, really like this idea. How does it sound to everyone else?

  4. Hmmm... what would be the faction name for these magical girls anyway?

I'm thinking the White Court and Black Court, considering that well the individual pieces can be seen as members of a royal court.

    1. Oh! I like it! It implies a form of justice as well as a level of power that accompanies it. I think it fits nicely.

And as the saying goes, "The enemy of my enemy is a problem for another day." ...Or was it, "The enemy of my enemy dies next."? Either way you have my approval.
