Sona Sitri was sitting in her office staring at her desk. It might seem a little strange that she was there so late at night, however, in truth she often wound up working into the wee hours of the morning. Imagine her surprise to find this drifting in through the window, as though carried in by the wind.
What was it that had surprised her so? A little black envelope, that's what. Her name written on it.
"Well?" Tsubaki asked while adjusting her glasses. "Are you going to stare at it, open it, or destroy it?"
"I feel a very strong compulsion to open it," Sona said. "Worryingly strong. The very idea of throwing it away or destroying it feels so wrong that every time I try to move to do so..."
To test her out, Tsubaki reached out to grab it - and found her hand seized by Sona's wrist. Her grip wasn't so much like a vice as it was beyond something so weak. Tsubaki was no slouch either, but she couldn't even move her fingers from how tightly her wrist was being grabbed.
Taking a deep breath, Sona used her other hand to pick up the envelope and flick it open. A slip of paper fell out of it, and she wound up reading something that chilled her to the core.
"I will tell your sister that you've picked up a magical girl interest - unless you put on this coat."
Moments later, there was a knock at the door. Sona released Tsubaki's hand, and then upon opening it she found a coat neatly folded up waiting for her.
"It seems a little too big for you," Tsubaki mused. "It would be remarkably baggy. It almost looks like a uniform of some kind."
Sona turned the page over in her hand and found... Pictures of herself wearing a magical girl outfit and smiling brightly. Where had this picture been taken? No! This was so embarrassing!
"If my sister finds out that I've been magically influenced to enjoy magical girls..." Sona muttered, starting to tremble in genuine fear of what this may bring. "It's tempting. Sorely tempting. I almost want to put that coat on."
"Pardon me, but you are currently wearing a magical girl costume at this very moment," Tsubaki astutely observed. Yes, indeed she was. A cute frilly pink leotard with hearts all over it and a ruffled skirt that basically didn't hide anything.
"I understand your general point, but it is not especially helpful," Sona muttered threateningly. Suddenly, her tone shifted to a bright and happy one, and she jumped on the table unbidden and happily sang out. "Magical Girl Sona has to be ready to fight the forces of darkness at a moment's notice! Teehee!"
"...Technically, we are the forces of darkness," Tsubaki sighed. "Never mind. What are you going to do?"
"Do? This is blatantly more of those weird magical items that we only just got rid of!" Sona yelled. "From whatever mysterious troublemaker sent them out! Trying to stir things up even more! There must be something weird about that coat for a start. Let me see it."
Sona didn't want to risk touching it herself, but studying it should be fine. It was red and yellow. There was a little clothing pin sticking in the collar, angled away so that it wouldn't jab into anyone. Taking it out felt like a bad idea, so Sona decided to leave it for now.
Something about the uniform did feel familiar. Was it something she'd seen in Devil history? That felt right. Though she couldn't place it for the life of her.
"Hold on, let's not be too hasty about this," Sona said. "They didn't say anything about doing it right away, or specify a time limit. So long as I put it on eventually, that should be fine."
"Nor did they give you any instructions about not informing anyone," Tsubaki observed. "Indeed, you have freely discussed this matter with me."
A careless oversight on the part of the would be blackmai- Oh, now she got it. Black envelope, blackmail. Cute. She wasn't laughing, though. She still felt stuck. Putting on a coat felt like such a weird specific thing to ask for that it was suspicious. It was easy. Too easy. Far, far too easy and straightforward. Why did they want that, specifically? Just put the coat on?
The frustrating part was that she felt completely trapped by this. A stupid coat like that, far too big for her! What was even the point?! Urgh! The worst possible fate would await her if she didn't, but at the same time -
Something was tugging on her strings. Making her want to do this against her will. She could feel it. Fight it, just a little bit, but only a little bit. Any time that she tried to figure out a way out of this mess, her imagination conjured it up. Her sister, excitedly flicking through these photographs, eyes practically shining like the sun.
<i>"Oh! Oh! Oh!"</i> Serafall would gasp, in behaviour quite unbefitting her position. "Oh my, sis, these are wonderful pictures! Come on, come to my studio, I'll show you how to really magical girl it up!"</i>
"Tsubaki, we must conquer this slumbering evil before it destroys the world!" Sona yelled in defiance of that future. She twirled around a makeshift wand that she'd thrown together to satisfy the urge to do exactly this (hence it being a paper star stuck onto the end of a ruler, and when that didn't satisfy her, glue and glitter was tossed on it willy nilly as well). "To start with, we must discover the one that sent this envelope and <i>subject them to torments the likes of which will make the underworld shake and tremble in fear lest it befall them as well.</i>
Went a bit supervillain there, but since magical girls got corrupted into being bad guys all the time it was still fine.
"A fine plan, but we have no real leads to speak of," Tsubaki said. "Unless... You intend for me to investigate this coat?"
"Also, alert Rias Gremory that another item like this has been sent out," Sona said. "It's very likely that there are others as well. Our mysterious troublemaker hasn't finished playing with us yet, it seems."
<hr>
"Idiot," Ravel rolled her eyes. She adjusted her clothes a bit, unused to the extra mass. It was nice having a figure to match the Bomb Queen, but... "You have this great big plan to ensure Rias marries you, and you sent the envelope to Sona SitrI? And you're making her wear some uniform that's too big for her? Wouldn't it have been better to make Rias wear a wedding dress?"
Riser watched carefully, surrounded by the rest of his har- his peerage, trying to ignore his little sister's foolish complaints. True enough, she was a clever girl. Perhaps even smarter than him. That was of no matter here. No consequence at all.
Still, she would keep complaining if he didn't explain his reasoning.
"A direct attack at Rias Gremory would be highly suspicious," Riser said. "As soon as the bridal gown arrived, she would know exactly what was going on and who the likely target was. Do you see what Sona is doing? She is trying to discover the true source. Investigating the coat. She will begin by investigating the enemies of the Sitri. Rival factions. She has no reason to suspect our family, for our interactions are far less than they are with the Gremory."
"And doing it this way kind of gives the game away, huh? She's going to tell Rias about your items now!" Ravel continued to complain. "You even used one of your pins on that uniform! What is that uniform even for, and why did you have it fitted to my new body anyway?!"
"Kukuku..." Riser chuckled. "That uniform is one I had specially made... based on Serafall's ridiculous magical girl show! It's the uniform for one of the head villains! By fitting it to your new enhanced proportions, I shall transform the already stunning Sona Sitri into an even more delectable figure! Furthermore, that magical girl uniform is an eyesore. She's far more suited to the villain type, and this will help her on that -"
"Pervert!" Ravel interrupted. "Pervert, pervert, pervert! I mean, I knew that already - stupid perverted big brother! I shouldn't have let mother talk me into joining your peerage. For the experience, she said! Hrmph! You've blown all sorts of tactical advantages here because you couldn't keep it in your pants!"
"But you joined knowing you were filling the little sister niche!"
"Yes, I did! That doesn't make you smart!" Ravel tossed a pillow at him. "Urgh! Now Rias is going to have her guard up, even if you send her an envelope now she might not go along with what you want!"
Send Rias an envelope...? Oh yes. Now that he thought about it, there was one slight problem that he hadn't considered in his plan.
"You only had the one envelope though, come to think..." Ravel said. "Sitting on Sona's desk right now. You'll never get it back without tipping your hand."
Riser squirmed uncomfortably in his seat. Well, yes, that was technically true wasn't it? Ahem! A mere oversight, he would... adjust his plan. Figure out a way around it, and -
"Urgh, fine! I'll help you out!" Ravel grunted. She thrust a pen and paper into his hand. "Write the following and have it sent into her office before she leaves. You're lucky you have me as a little sister, you know!"
<hr>
"That's right Rias, it's best if we meet up to discuss this in more detail," Sona said. Over the phone. Calling up her own rival like this was a little injuring to the pride, but since they were both under threat right now it was the best thing for both of them. "Come here, and I'll fill you in on -"
Suddenly, a paper plane flew in through the window. It circled around Sona's head before settling on the desk in front of her. She sneered at it. Accusatorily. How dare it appear like that before her eyes? She flicked it open, biting at her lip and -
<i>"Put the coat on in the next minute, then drop the black envelope out the window. We're not playing around here."</i>
Dah-dumpf. Oh no. The blackmailer must be getting impatient. Sona had been worried about this. Sixty seconds or her sister would find out - Nngh! No, dammit! She dropped the phone and lunged for the coat. To hell with it! Putting her on a timer like this was unreasonable, but that was kind of the point of blackmail in the first place wasn't it? She pulled the coat on over herself. Baggy, as she expected -
But not for long.
Tsubaki was staring down at her chest with her jaw hanging slightly open. "What in the world...?" she muttered to herself. Sona looked down as well. She couldn't see her feet. Her breasts weren't exactly small, but now they were - Gulp! She might be bigger than Rias or Akeno now! Checking herself, other aspects of her figure had definitely changed too. She was a bit taller, her hips a bit more pronounced, and for some reason she had this weird desire to drain the life force from mortals.
<i>"Sona? Sona, is everything alright?"</i> Ah. Rias on the phone. Sona wobbled a little - then slipped the coat off and strode across the room, feeling a marked change in her gait. Strange. She was almost... marching? She picked up the phone while standing as if at attention, and then spoke crisply and clearly.
"Pardon my rudeness, nothing is wrong," she said. Oh yes. The envelope. Damn. She picked it up and handed it to Tsubaki, then pointed to the window. "You know Rias, it has been a while since we hit the town. Why don't we lure some humans together and get them to form... contracts with us?"
<i>"... I'll be there shortly. Don't leave your office."</i>
Very good. Very good. Sona sat back down at her desk. Her head felt a bit weird. It was lke - like there were two warring voices inside her head. One telling her to be a sparkly, bubbly hero for justice. The other, that she was a minion, a mere tool for the greatest of evils.
Well... It probably wasn't a big deal. Whichever voice won out in the end, at least her sister wouldn't find out she was suddenly obsessed with magical girls.
