A holy building. Of course he would have to enter a holy building. Tiemaya sighed in frustration, accidentally causing a passerby to walk straight into a tree. This was a very worrying turn of events, no doubt of that! No question at all!
Many people tend to pace around while lost in thought. You can see the pose now: Slightly leaning forward with hands clasped behind their back. Brows furrowed over fierce eyes that might be looking at the pavement in a literal sense, but the mind was not truly seeing it. Those same eyes dash about, left and right as logic and creativity wage war in the mind.
But a succubus was not a person. A succubus does not pace. When a succubus is lost in deep thought, they strut. Oh boy do they strut!
So Tiemaya was strutting her stuff just outside the temple gates thinking very hard about what she’d just learned and not paying any attention to the looks the passers-by were giving her. Like that one businessman that stumbled into that tree at the same time a jogger ran into it from the other side.
Alright. So, this guy she finds makes her feel more alive than she’s felt in - well, however long it’s actually been since she felt so alive. To the point where she kissed him, which also felt way different from usual, and she accidentally drained him a little tiny bit too much.
What else could she do but drag him off home and give him the chance to recover? She’d been worried sick about this particular mortal, because if she had been more careful this boy could’ve been her meal ticket for the next couple of decades! So what’s the first thing he does when he wakes up?
High tails it out of there and runs to the nearest temple.
Which meant that he probably somehow noticed something was up and was seeking spiritual advice, which meant hanging around outside this gate was an even worse idea than it normally might be. So why wasn’t she leaving?
“Because that energy boost is too much to ignore,” she whispered, stopping in place to think about it. “Even thinking about it makes me - mmm!” Tiemaya bit her lip, squirmed and shuddered in place and didn’t even notice the two passing policemen that simultaneously fainted with blood streaming from their noses. “No way am I giving that up! Besides which, a little risk could so easily lead to such a great big reward... Not to mention stave off a good bit of boredom!”
At that exact moment Tiemaya stopped and winced for a reason she didn’t quite understand at first. There was this strange sensation, almost as if something was trying to draw her in. Almost as if - Her head slowly turned towards the temple, and through the use of supernatural senses far above and beyond anything humanity is capable of she observed something that made her gasp.
“That’s not possible,” she said. “That is not possible! How could there be succubic energy in there?! The temple walls should have repelled it!”
She asked the question, but somehow she knew the answer was directly tied to that strange young man. Curiouser and curiouser. It wasn’t every day that a demon got to play the role of Alice. At this rate, even she might see any number of impossible things before breakfast.
Whatever else she could say, she sure as hell wasn’t bored anymore!

Try to imagine that you went to the dentist one day in desperate need of a filling. You suck up the pain as long as you can stand it, but it can’t be put off. It needs done, and that’s a fact. So you’ve gone to the dentist. You arrive just in the nick of time for your appointment, you’re led into the surgery, you lie back on the dentist’s chair. Everything is all set up. You’re in position staring at the ceiling when the dentist leans in with a needle and just as he’s injecting the anaesthetic into the gum he says the following.
“This is my first time doing this.”
At that very moment you will know a fear; a terror gripping your soul that may well be difficult to comprehend until it happens firsthand, and that is a fact. Logically every dentist has their first filling. Logically they have each extracted a wisdom tooth for the first time at some point or other. It’s a logical point. Inevitable when thought about for even a moment. There is a first time for everything is a phrase used to imply that even the seemingly impossible might some day occur in spite of the odds, but it would be wiser to look at it the other way around. That which has been done before had to have been done for the first time at some point. Everybody knows this. Everyone is aware of this simple fact.
They’d just rather it was someone else entirely that was this particular dentist’s first filling patient, even if it was some jerk right before them in the waiting room. That’s a fact.
Makoto was aware of this particular quirk of psychology. She knew that most people - upon learning that someone that was supposed to be an expert was in fact engaging in a particular expert capacity was doing it for the first time - well, it made them uncomfortable. An expert is supposed to be someone that can be trusted to perform a task, and do it better than any untrained fool off the street. If this is an expert’s first time, then they are untested in the field. If they are going to make mistakes then they shall surely make them here, and learn from them for later clients or customers?
There was a sort of rationality behind the fear that Makoto could follow. Which was why she was very carefully not telling this Kiyoshi boy that she had never ever ever purified someone before. Not one single time. She was completely winging this based on her training. Without supervision. Without assistance. All alone. That was a fact.
Another issue was that the unnatural aura appeared to be growing in spite of her efforts. Not that the boy should be told of such things, just in case he is an innocent in this matter and it makes the process of purification even harder than it need to be.
And then, he shuddered in the water. A small motion, but it was just enough. Just barely enough for the back of her hand to contact his arm, for an unnoticed second. In that second Makoto fell victim to a different psychological trick that she was aware of, and would have certainly appreciated were she a third person involved in this situation observing passively. But she was not. It is all to do with the nature of evil. Real evil in real people doing real things. Real people do not tend to behave like your typical villains. Real people do not tend to do evil things simply because they are evil things to do.
Real people do evil things because they do not see them as evil. Real people do evil things for reasons that make perfect sense to them, even if an outsider will not see it that way.
But that was not the trick in question. Oh, there was a certain relation to it but that was not what had afflicted poor Makoto just then. Consider a driver who is caught in heavy traffic, when some other swine of a driver swoops in out of nowhere and cuts him off. This driver will feel irate and the victim of injustice that this other driver dared to breach traffic etiquete and delay his journey to whatever destination he may have: But now suppose that the next day, this same driver is running very late for a very important meeting, and in an act of desperation cuts off another driver in traffic. Does he think poorly of himself? No. Of course not.
Because people do not see the evil hiding within themselves nearly as easily as they see it within others.
Therefore: Makoto did not notice the effect that direct physical contact with Kiyoshi’s bare flesh had upon her. She did not consider it strange to suddenly become aware of how attractive he was. Nor did she consider it a little strange to suddenly remember certain rituals that she had certainly never been taught in her training...
“Um... M-Miss Makoto? Are we done here?” Kiyoshi shivered. “As much as I enjoy your company, this water is really, really cold!”
“The cold water has done as much as it can do, but the aura still lingers,” Makoto said. “Further purification measures must be taken to ensure this disgusting aura does not pollute anyone or anything you come into contact with.”
“Oh. What sort of measures did you have in mind?”
He would not refuse. He was a man. She was attractive. It may not be a fact, but it was close enough for Makoto. “Take my virginity.”
“Okay, I guess I can - Hold on. Run that by me again?”
“The body and the spirit are connected,” Makoto said, beginning to crawl her way around the poor man afflicted with this disgusting aura. “In order to fully eradicate this insidious influence, I insist that we become one of body, and therefore one of spirit. This will enable me to use my spiritual training to finish it off, and perhaps even identify where and how it came to attach itself to you.”
Kiyoshi stared at her for a moment when she’d finished crawling around to his front. Then he sighed, shook his head and said “This is the last time I go out drinking with Yukio and let him pick a movie to riff. His porn collection must be affecting my mind.”
Makoto didn’t know exactly what to make of that, so she chose that moment to pounce.
Awesome.
ReplyDeleteNot sure the parallel between traffic behavior and what Makoto experiences is a perfect fit, but it works well enough. Regardless, the episode was thoroughly entertaining. Great work.
