So we've established what fanservice is. Gratuitous appeals to the audience. Great. That's wonderful. We can perfectly see why a couple of horny boys staring at Uihara's barely covered behind would give her several points of experience, especially when bending over. That's pretty gratuitous, but they were enjoying it all the same. Pretty much the definition of fanservice.
Except... That's only half the issue. We know what fanservice means. That's the easy part. Simple, trivial. The trouble comes from the follow up question: What does it mean when fanservice levels up?
From Uihara's point of view, she was just doing a little bit of warming up before getting into the water. Stretching out those limbs. One, two, bend. One, two, flex. Then the level up hit, she felt a little bit weird and that was followed by this strange compulsion to bend at the waist. Touch her toes.
Now, she didn't think much of that. Not at all. Touching her toes was a perfectly reasonable exercise to perform under those conditions. She wasn't really aware of the boys checking her out, nor that she would be giving them a better look at her butt while bent over. She was just a little touch better at fanservice than she was before without being aware of it.
"Ugh," Uihara shuddered upon straightening up again. "Must be cold today, I suppose..."
She ignored it and set her mind instead to the swimming lesson. One of her classmates put her hand on her shoulder, looked her in the eyes and asked, "Are you feeling alright?"
Uihara stumbled a little into her for reasons she didn't quite understand. "I'm fine," she said, absently stepping a little closer to the girl and resting her hands on her shoulders. "Just felt a little strange all of a sudden for some reason."
Off behind her, unknown to the two girls, there were a bunch of boys watching that close contact between girls with great, rising interest. Oh, sure, it was just a little bit of innocent contact between two cute girls, but to the mind already staring with lustful intention how could this be anything but fanservice?

Level UP! New Level 9, 20/50 for Level Up</font>
Yes, that was a lot of experience, but that sort of thing pretty much demanded it. The truly important bit was what happened next, when Uihara walked towards the edge of the pool. She felt strange again. It was a feeling that she couldn't quite place, but we can. She was better at "fanservice", and getting better all the time. What does that mean? A couple of things.
The first point was found in her steps, which were rather more enticing than before. Not much, but a little. It was the sort of gait that drew the eyes slightly easier than normal, attracted attention and kept it there for a fraction of a second longer. It evoked other pleasant imagery, gave a slightly higher rate of satisfaction to view.
The second point was partly a consequence of the first. Namely, that in order for one to deliver fanservice one must have fans in the first place. This is, in point of fact, a vital component to fanservice. How can one deliver service without fans to deliver it to? Therefore, in order to improve levels in fanservice, one must improve both levels of fans, and levels of service.
Which is why, as the lesson progressed, Uihara was unknowingly gaining experience points for doing little more than, for example, doing an impressive dive into the pool (5 points), climbing out in a way that placed tremendous emphasis on her figure (10 points), helping another girl with her strokes by holding her body and getting her to mimic the action by holding her arms (another 20 points) and, well, you get the idea.
And while that happened more of the boys were sneaking peeks. They were whispering among themselves, things like "Hey, Uihara's cuter than I remember." Or "Ooh, I could stare at those thighs for days!" Or "Nice dive!" Or "I can't take my eyes off her."
Word of mouth spread among the boys present like an epidemic. They'd all caught Uihara fever, and were determined to make it spread without her even knowing it. More fans meant more service. Better service attracted more fans. In no time at all, she'd gained yet another two levels, and was now sitting pretty at level 12 fanservice, which required a full one hundred experience points to reach the next.
And Uihara was oblivious to every single bit of it, merely going through the motions of her swimming lesson while occasionally feeling strange little impulses of sensation going through her whenever she levelled up.
- Continue with the swimming lesson.
- After the swimming lesson, she discovers her new fanclub.
- After the swimming lesson, she runs into Saten again.
- Meanwhile, Saten has been experimenting with skirt flipping.
- Meanwhile, Saten has been investigating that device.
- Something else
I will say first that I am really happy that you got interested in this thread. I have been sad, feeling like it would never get continued. And I was just not having inspiration to do it myself. So I am happy to see that you want to add something. And I think that I may even get some Inspiration myself from this.
ReplyDeleteI was just wondering, Lumitiel have you by chance ever played the Roleplaying game Nobilis?
ReplyDeleteThere is a skill in the game called Aspect. It basically means being really good at being human. The high Level is basically what I assume a high-level Level Upper user would get. It is basically going beyond just superhuman and reaching into downright impossible stuff. Like being so good at stealing that you can steal memories, or so good at hiding things that you can hide the moon in your pocket or being so good at seduction that you can seduce a fire into not burning you etc....
I have not. But all of that does sound about right. For example, a high enough level of "skirt flipping" would enable Saten to flip a skirt just by looking at it.
