Discussion: NGE Oversynch

Let's discuss Oversynch

Obviously we should take a look at how Shinji and Asuka are reacting to their oversynched state. However, which of the options should be taken is currently a little beyond me. Any of them could work from a narrative standpoint, and any of them could be used to contrast it quite effectively.

What do you think?

  1. I propose that the oversynching leads to some Gender bending for Shinji and some sexual yuri horniness for Asuka and Rei,

hence the first option, sending them home with a clean bill of health

    1. Not every thread has to be overtly sexual right off the bat, man. It’s not unreasonable to think things could go that way in due time, but I believe it would be much better to get a clearer sense of what’s happening to them first.

(But as for gender bending for Shinji? I dunno.)

Among the options, the only one I’m not sure about is having an Angel attack already. Well, it could work as long as the focus remains much more on how they’re reacting than on the battle itself. I’ve been voting for in order to see how the three of them respond to the situation and to each other. Not that it won’t be interesting to see how the changes in them affect everyone else (not to mention the overall plot).

    2. Should gender-bending Shinji be scoffed at so readily? This is Evangelion. The series where people turn to orange juice because the boundaries of their souls are eroded and can turn back to normal if they recognize themselves. Throw in some crazy anime logic, Rei's angel DNA and powers and Asuka's dominating personality and who knows what could happen.

I'm not necessarily saying do it, but out of all the crazy impossible gender bending scenarios out there, this one actually makes some amount of sense based on the rules of their world.

And it's not even: Because Magic.

    3. At what point did I readily scoff at the idea? Please don’t distort my words like that. All I said on the matter was an incredibly modest “I dunno.” Because I don’t. I’m just not sure it would add anythig of value here. But I certainly might be wrong about that, hence my equivocation on the matter.

    4. To further clarify, I have absolutely nothing against girl-type Shinji. I’m actually quite fond of that approach, as long as it adds something of value.

If Shinji were to get a gender flip here, wouldn’t that also mean that Shinji and Asuka should probably take on some of Rei’s non-human traits as well?

    5. sort of like fusing parts of the 3?

like Shinji gets a gender bender that's a semi fusion of Asuka and Rei. he obtains parts of their personality

and the same goes for Rei and Asuka? like Asuka becomes more docile while Rei obtains a backbone?

    6. Well, perhaps to a degree. But it won’t be much fun if they’re averaged out so thoroughly that they’re just three versions of the same person. They each need to retain some distinctiveness.

  2. What about a feedback loop that amplifies their thoughts and emotions to a degree? (i.e. Shinji on some level finds the two girls to be attractive which causes them to find the other attractive which feeds back to Shinji, causing him to find them more attractive which feeds back to them, etc., etc. ) Not really sure how it would stop aside from certain limits that are eventually reached (like how bringing two phones together won't have the noise grow infinitely louder since the speakers have a maximum volume).

Eh, I don't know. I'm tired and need to sleep now.

    1. That seems fairly reasonable, even probable.

  3. For those interested, I was thinking of using this as a deconstruction of the ideas behind Instrumentality. Because when you actually sit down and really think about it, that thing is completely insane on just about every bullet point along the way.

Sure, the sample is small but it would make an effective illustration nonetheless.

    1. I see, I see. Yeah, I’d expect that would work rather well. Good call, sir.
