Tainted Cube Voting Closed: New Poll will begin shortly

That's this week's Tainted Cube poll closed! A new one will be open momentarily. I have noticed a curious pattern emerge over these first two weeks. It seems as though Code Geass and Haruhi both get one vote each, then some other series decide to tie up for the majority of it until a tiebreaker occurs at the end. Last week it was between Eva and Sailor Moon, this week Ranma and Rosario.

I wonder if the pattern will hold this week.

Poll Results
Code Geass
  1 (7%)
Haruhi Suzumiya
  1 (7%)
Love Hina
  0 (0%)
Neon Genesis Evangelion
  0 (0%)
Ranma 1/2
  7 (47%)
Rosario + Vampire
  6 (40%)
Urusei Yatsura
  0 (0%)

Where are they now?
It is my hope to encourage discussion over the direction that future episodes may take. The Sailor Moon episode has already been planned out, and will consist of essentially the first episode of the anime with minor tweaks to make it funnier.

Though given the sense of humour on that show almost anything I write will be an improvement. As for the rest, here is where they all left off:

Code Geass: Lelouch has just acquired his Geass, and is about to encounter Villetta.

Haruhi Suzumiya: Kyon has just met Haruhi for the first time (from his perspective, but let's not get into the John Smith mess quite yet).

Love Hina: Keitaro was heading in to meet his grandmother. Has yet to take a bath to help himself relax.

Neon Genesis Evangelion: Shinji was waiting for Misato to arrive, and had just caught sight of an Angel for the first time.

Rosario + Vampire: Tsukune had just arrived at the school, and was about to be crashed into by a certain cute vampire.

Sailor Moon: Usagi had just saved Naru in her first night as Sailor Moon.

Urusei Yatsura: Ataru was on his way home. On arriving he will find out about the aliens and the tag race.

Removed From the Poll
As the winner of this week's poll, Ranma 1/2 will be removed for three weeks.

Sailor Moon: 2
Ranma 1/2: 3

Discussion of Latest Update
This was quite unnecessary last week, given that whichever series won the vote the events would have unfolded rather close to the canon first episode (or thereabouts). But this week, things are not quite so simple. This week there will be a major alteration to the ongoing events of a series that extends beyond the mysterious arrival of an impossible cube. This time, Usagi has inadvertantly altered the reality of Ranma 1/2.

So which of the options would be best employed in this instance? The most popular (as judged from previous comments) appears to be the Sailor V one. I agree, and believe that Kasumi would be the most appropriate target for this with Akane being second place.

I like this idea quite a lot, and can see several fun directions to go with regarding Kasumi becoming Sailor V. But two questions do linger. The first is "if Sailor V exists in htis setting, then so must antagonists for her to deal with. Who are they?" The other point being "How is this twisted in a perverted way?"

While I have some ideas on that, I'd like to see if anyone else has something to say on this particular issue first.

  1. Alas. I really liked the idea of V standing for "Vampire." Well, I did my part in the voting, so my conscience is clear!

Kasumi is not a bad second choice by any means, but you're quite right that it requires antagonists…of a certain variety. (And what should V stand for in her case? "Venus," but in the sense of being super-feminine? Well, there is something else it could stand for, huh? But the idea of Kasumi being *that* kind of Sailor V is pretty embarrassing, if not inconsistent with the theme of the thread.)

Hmm. Perhaps Kodachi could be an enemy? Happosai would be an obvious antagonist later on, I would say. Maybe draw in some outside characters from different universes than any of the series in the thread?

  2. In a setting of martial artists and whatnot, the one big thing that's part of it is rivalries. Rivalries and grudges.

Hence, instead of a nebulous overlord with a variety of minions(of which only one of them gets sent each week instead of an all out invasion), Sailor V!Kasumi's major antagonists would be Dark Magical Girls of some sort. Of course, if they would be pragmatic like those from more serious magical girl series like Nanoha or Madoka, who knows. Probably not if we want some hijinks from all this. (Although there is Nanoha and her 'making friend with people you blew up with magic' meme)

Question, would Sailor V!Kasumi still have a familiar/mentor at her side? If so, what's the likelihood it would be a cat?

  3. I'm thinking some nebulous evil conspiracy revolving around the Jusenkyo springs. Aliens doing whatever with them to achieve whatever to conquer whatever! (after all, those people had to drown somehow...) Kasumi has to grapple with the servant of evil that now lives in her home, while keeping male Ranma and the rest of her sisters in the dark about her identity!

    1. But would tying it to Jusenkyo seem *too* coincidental? I can't tell. I just kind of prefer the idea of Kasumi having her own life and adventures not directly tied to Ranma. But I can easily be convinced otherwise!

  4. But that's the beauty of it! Ranma is the one who gets tied to Kasumi! She/he becomes a victim of the conspiracy that Kasumi fights against, an unwitting or unwilling pawn, a footnote in the master plan. Suddenly the main character, isn't. Kasumi gets to have all the character development she never had in the show. The interweaving threads of morality criss cross into a tapestry of betrayal and intrigue, until no one's even sure what side they're on anymore!

And then, somewhere in between there, people have sex. Maybe.

Basically, the aliens created the Jusenkyo Springs as a Monster-of-the-Week generator. People who fall into it (or are splashed by it, pushed into it by the evil guide, etc.) are transformed. Though I'm not sure exactly what these transformations would reflect, it will probably be bitchin'.

Or, Kasumi turns into Sailor Vending Machine, defender of snack foods everywhere!

I could honestly go for either.

Of course, maybe the answer isn't restructuring the entire show into a Magical Girl show. There could be a martial artist thing going on, and there just happens to be magical girl thing going on too. But the problem there is that it would be very difficult for one to not overshadow the other.

Maybe the best solution would be for things to be normal, except Kasumi's a magical girl. Events progress in spite of that instead of because of it, and things change by virtue of a new alien/extradimensional/hate spawned enemy messing stuff up.

The possibilities are endless, and it honestly depends on how much Lumitiel wants to change the Ranma world. Is Sailor V a meteor smashing into the series, or a drop in a slowly rippling pond?

  5. Hmm. Well, I certainly agree with those latter sentiments. However, I personally hope it's more of a ripple than a tsunami. Or perhaps another analogy could be a pebble that *may* build to a landslide as it progresses. We shall see!

  6. Considering that each series is, from this point onwards, going to undergo some form of alteration or other each time we see it again... I do think it would be much, much better to keep the alterations in the ripple category.

  7. Though I do have to say that the real trick here is that I want Ranma to meet Sailor V. Not Kasumi. Sailor V. Which means I need to contrive a way for Ranma to encounter Sailor V within the initial events of Ranma 1/2.

The first thing that came to mind was Akane being possessed by some dark force or other, and Sailor V cures her of that. Trick is, I think that may be too drastic a change to the series. Does anyone have a better suggestion?

  8. I think I got something.

Kuno, seeking to win the heart of the pig-tailed girl, is possessed as his emotions run wild. He attacks Ranma with newfound evil power.

But the thing is, Ranma doesn't notice that he's possessed, or that he's acting any different at all, and just pounds him into the dirt like he would do anyway. Sailor V arrives to find the monster she'd come to defeat lying in a heap with Ranma standing over him, brushing himself off.

    Hilarious awkwardness ensues.
