Story: NGE Oversynch

While fun was happening at the fair, back in the Geofront is was business as usual. And by business as usual, we of course mean skulduggery, conspiracy and rampant paranoia. This time, not so much from the usual suspects. Actually, it was from those least likely to be involved in such things: Namely, Misato and -

And do you know what, thinking about it, Misato's the only one out of this gestalt that is not involved in the conspiracy nonsense. Her entire job is actually just making sure that the pilots beat the Angels. Them living with her was, if anything, extra responsibilities she took on to better manage that job.

Ritsuko and Kaji? Up to their eyeballs in it. Actually, they were up to about a foot over their real height if we were to make clear how in it they both were. In different ways, working for different groups involved in all the myriad deep undercover bullshit going on around here, but all the same, they were really deep into it.

So what does that do about Misato's situation? Good question, mister rhetorical question, let's try to actually answer it though.

She was, at present, trying to help Ritsuko figure out what was going on with this whole gestalt thing, while also experiencing Kaji rushing through the Geofront in a madcap dash to find two parts of the other gestalt they had going on who were, apparently, giving each other blowjobs.

"Ooooooh, yeah, fuck yeah!" Maya gasped, rubbing her neck while sitting on the floor with her legs spread open. "Oohhhh, I don't wanna do anything else for the rest of my life but this!"

"That's not a good sign," Misato sighed. She turned towards Ritsuko to give her a questioning look. In turn, Ritsuko looked back and nodded her agreement. "Right, not a good sign at all. At this rate the three of them will be completely useless at their jobs."

"That's an excellent roast set up, by the way," Ritsuko mused. "Wouldn't be true, though. Personality issues for at least one of them aside, they're all quite good at their jobs."

None of this was especially helpful to their current situation.

"Should I be helping Kaji find them?" Misato asked. "We'd be able to coordinate better and search more of the Geofront that way."

"True," Ritsuko said. "Not to mention that you have access to certain areas that he does not. Then again, I have access to areas that you don't - And on top of that, I need you here to make sure Maya stays off me. Her attraction to me might, under her current condition, compel her to jump me if we're left alone."

Ah. That was a really good point. Then again, if Kaji did find the other two men what was he going to be able to do to them?

I was thinking I'd kick them in the balls.

Straightforward, but it ought to work. Evaluating the situation tactically, this was the best approach to take after all. Besides which, Misato had a really bad habit of getting lost out there, and would probably distract Ritsuko by asking all the time for directions.

As such, it was time for them to do Science. Misato wanted to do an evil laugh, but she felt Ritsuko scowling at her through their connection, and a silent admonishment that real evil scientists don't do evil laughs, it gives the game away.

"So what do we do first?" Misato sighed.

"In any experiment, you have to control the variables," Ritsuko said. "You have to figure out what variables you're testing for, and then do absolutely everything reasonable to ensure the others are equal. Then carefully, carefully, change the other variables under controlled conditions so that -"

"You want to make more Gestalts?"

That should probably have come out like a shocked gasp rather than a kid waking up on Christmas morning to find out Santa had been.

"Who would you suggest, perhaps?" Ritsuko asked. "Perhaps the Commander and Sub-Commander? I'm sure they'd love that. Then, for that matter, who would be the third member of that little gestalt?"

Misato opened her mouth - and couldn't honestly answer that question. Hrm. Okay then. Well, let's see. They were able to make themselves a brand new Gestalt already with the bridge bunnies, right? So, if they could do it again that would be fantastic. The question was - who would be in that gestalt?

A heavy silence hung in the air for a moment there as though they were waiting for the universe itself to answer. Which it did - but not in the actual lab.

"Hold her down while I get these diodes on her," Ritsuko said.

=====

You know who doesn't appear anything like enough in these stories I write for Evangelion? THe answer is: The one, the only! Mari Makinami Illustrious! Yes, that's right! The new girl who did not appear at all in the OG series, but has basically appeared in every new piece of work in some capacity or another since the release of End of Evangelion!

Here she comes, skipping through the corridor in her pink plugsuit, happy as a clam at high tide. That's the full saying, by the way. Clams are happiest at high tide, because it brings them food easier and hides them from predators.

She encountered a rather bedraggled man rushing through the hallway, seeming like he was desperately looking for something. Mari, naturally enough, completely ignored everyone else that she could ask for directions and zeroed in on him.

"Hello, I'm lost!" she said. "But my real name is Mari~ So nice to meetcha! What's your name?"

"Huh?" the man said. He looked down at her. "I'm sorry, I'm busy."

"Which is it?" she countered, skipping into his path without letting him leave. "Is your name sorry, or is it busy?"

"... Dad jokes, huh?" the man said, shooting her a charming smile. "The name is Kaji. What was it you were after, little lady?"

"Well! As you can probably tell, I'm a pilot," she said. Then gave a little twirl around. "I'm not formally joining the team quite yet, but merely visiting for the time being. It's not a big deal, really - I'm here with permission, after all!"

"Sure," Kaji said. "And where were you planning to go...?"

"I wanted to meet up with the other pilots," she said. "I want to see how I... Measure up."

"Mari!" another girl yelled, rushing out there and waving her hands. "Don't run ahead like that!"

"Mari!" the girl shouted again, skidding to a stop a few meters away. She bent forward with her hands on her knees, clearly out of breath. "Don’t run ahead like that! You said you wouldn’t!"

Mari leaned backward at an impossible angle and beamed at her. "But Marieee, I found a mysterious salaryman in the wild! These are rare spawns!"

Kaji blinked. "Hey."

The panting girl straightened. She had pale hair tied back in a neat ribbon, her posture rigid despite the sprint she’d just finished. Her eyes flicked to Kaji, sharpened with instant assessment.

"…Of course you did," she muttered. "Sorry about her. She slips her handler."

"Handler?" Kaji repeated.

"That’s me!" Mari chirped, pointing at Marie with both hands like she was presenting a game show prize. "She keeps me from stealing classified documents and experimental weapons! Most of the time."

Marie visibly resisted the urge to grab her by the collar. "Most of the time, she causes additional incidents."

Before Kaji could reply, a third figure arrived at a jog—slower, heavier footfalls, the sound of boots instead of school shoes. This girl didn’t look frantic. She looked… tense. Dark hair, sharp eyes, and the unmistakable stiffness of someone who expected things to go wrong at any moment.

"Mari," she said flatly, "you promised not to talk to anyone without clearing it first."

Mari tilted her head. "But, Mayumi~ I didn’t talk. I sang. There’s a difference."

"There really isn’t," Mayumi Yamagishi replied.

Kaji’s interest visibly sharpened now. Three girls, two of them clearly trying to restrain the third, and one of them in a pink plugsuit.

"…Okay," he said carefully. "I feel like I just walked into the middle of something important."

Mayumi’s eyes narrowed. "You’re Kaji Ryoji."

He smiled. "Guilty as charged."

Her shoulders tightened a fraction. Clearly, his reputation preceded him. "We’re here on temporary assignment. Observation only. No interference with NERV operations."

"Got it," Kaji said. Then he tilted his head as if he'd just heard something. "Ah... If the three of you wouldn't mind? Head down that hall and take two lefts, then knock on the door you find marked 'Laboratory', would you? If you do, we'll be able to get you meeting the other pilots shortly. Got it?"

"Aye, sir!" Mari smartly saluted, while the other two girls wearily rolled their eyes and followed after her. Yep. This was going to go great places. She could tell.
